RFBYC Sailing Institute
Training has a new look at the RFBYC Sailing Institute
Winter 2017 programmes are now in progress for youth and young adults.
The RFBYC works on a mentor structure where information is shared and passed on to the next generation. On the water, the Youth Racing Squad and Match Racing Squad (Intermediate and Advanced Groups) learn teamwork and communication skills on the BW8 keelboats while learning advanced fleet racing and match racing. These youth sailors are very lucky to have a pool of talented coaches in their older peers. Coached by the Performance Squad who are highly skilled match racing sailors, many of them compete on the World Match Racing Tour circuit and they are excellent mentors for the next generation.
Adapting the training programme to suit the group, the Performance Squad are currently participating in valuable Mentoring and Networking sessions with a group of well-regarded older members from RFBYC.
All RFBYC Sailing Institute sailors are involved in specialised and fun sessions such as learning to make sails, rigging and splicing and match racing regattas.

YOUTH RACING SQUAD
For capable young sailors.
This course aims to develop teamwork and communication skills on the BW8 keelboats. A coach may be on-board the BW8 keelboat with the sailors to assist with learning. Course content includes advanced fleet racing knowledge, valuable for any class of sailboat racing.
Youth Racing Squad sailors will have a lot of fun, make new friends and skills learnt in the small keelboats will provide further opportunities in the sport.
Two weekends of training, 1pm to 5pm. Invitation to be involved in the two day Sailing Institute regatta in September and invitation to Sailing Institute Presentation Evening.
Graduates are invited to enrol in the Match Racing Squad.
MATCH RACING SQUAD
Graduates from the Youth Racing Squad.
Eight training sessions, 1pm to 5pm and invitations to selected sailors to two squad regattas (at least one regatta invitation per sailor). Plus involvement in the two day Sailing Institute Regattas on 2 & 3 September and the Presentation Evening.
Sailors need to have graduated from a Youth Racing Squad course or previously been a Match Racing Squad participant. Match Racing Squad sailors will rotate through teams on the BW8 keelboats learning valuable teamwork, communication and boat handling skills. The course will give them the confidence to crew on yachts and further their opportunities in sailing. Some may wish to follow the pathway through to match racing events and try out for representative teams. Most importantly the sailors will enjoy the time with their peers and develop new networks.
Skills learnt will be valuable for any class of sailboat racing.
Graduates may apply for the Performance Squad and some may be invited to become part of a representative team.
On application and by invitation
14 training sessions from April to September followed by ongoing event support for RFBYC representative match racing teams. Includes three regattas (one full weekend) and Sailing Institute Presentation Evening.
Sailors need to have graduated from a Match Racing Squad course or on presentation of their sailing CV.
Performance Squad sailors may already be representing RFBYC at interstate and international match racing competition or may be looking to follow this pathway.
Financial support is available to teams travelling to represent RFBYC in match racing events that have come through the Performance Squad.
Other members of the squad may be skilled sailors who wish to enjoy the discipline of match racing with their peers and may aspire to further develop their skills and become a crew in keelboat racing.
