Learn to Sail Courses at Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club

Would your children like to learn to sail or are you simply looking for an interesting children’s holiday or weekend activity? Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club conducts popular learn to sail programmes throughout the year.

Courses are conducted by instructors accredited by Australian Sailing, in the safe and sheltered waters of Freshwater Bay in Peppermint Grove. Enrolments are open to children between the ages of 5 and 17.

To enrol in one of our courses, please select  the course time that suits you best:  School Holidays or Weekends.

Courses Ideal for 4 to 6 Year Olds:

LITTLE TACKERS - Introduction to Optimists

Fun introduction to sailing for young children.  Sessions are conducted in safe, sheltered waters in front of the Clubhouse. Course covers rigging an Optimist, tying basic knots, games and hands-on sailing in shallow water.

Prerequisite:  No sailing experience is necessary. Participants must be able to swim and be water confident (buoyancy vest supplied).

Cost: Non-member $160, Junior Member $145 - both prices inclusive of GST (for 10 hour program)

Courses Ideal for 7 to 12 Year Olds:

TACKERS 1 - Having Fun in Optimists

First level of Yachting Australia’s “Tackers” introductory learn to sail program in Optimists. Suitable for children aged 7 to 12. Course focuses on learning through fun and games tailored for enthusiastic children.

Prerequisite:  Participants must be able to swim and be water confident - buoyancy vest supplied.

Cost: Non-member $310, Junior Member $280 - both prices inclusive of GST (for 20 hour program)

TACKERS 2 - Tricks and Techniques in Optimists

Second level of Yachting Australia’s “Tackers” introductory learn to sail program in Optimists. Course focuses on learning through fun and games tailored for primary school aged children. Introduces sailing close hauled, triangle and windward and return courses, roll tacking and roll gybing.

Prerequisite: Tackers 1: Having Fun, must be able to swim and be water confident, buoyancy vest supplied.

Cost: Non-member $310, Junior Member $280 - both prices inclusive of GST (for 20 hour program)

TACKERS 3 - Sailing Fast! in Optimists

Third level of Yachting Australia’s “Tackers” introductory learn to sail program in Optimists. Course focuses on learning through fun and games tailored for primary school aged children. Introduces racing techniques and theory.

Prerequisite:  Tackers 1: Having Fun & Tackers 2: Tricks & Techniques, must be able to swim and be water confident, buoyancy vest supplied.

Cost: Non-member $310, Junior Member $280 - both prices inclusive of GST (for 20 hour program)

 

Courses Ideal for 12 + Year Olds:

START SAILING 1 in Pacers

First level of Yachting Australia’s Discover Sailing program. Course is an introduction to fundamental boat handling skills, including rigging, capsize recovery drill, rope work, launch and recovery, sailing techniques and weather forecasts.

Prerequisite:  Participants must be able to swim and be water confident - buoyancy vest supplied.

Cost: Non-member $240, Junior Member $215 - both prices inclusive of GST (for 15 hour program)

START SAILING 2 in Pacers

Second level of Yachting Australia’s Discover Sailing program. Course builds on skills learnt in Start Sailing 1 (or equivalent) and encourages children to become confident and independent sailors. Course introduces gybing, man over board recovery and use of tiller extensions.

Prerequisite: Start Sailing 1 or equivalent, must be able to swim and be water confident, buoyancy vest supplied.

Cost: Non-member $240, Junior Member $215 - both prices inclusive of GST (for 15 hour program)

BETTER SAILING - Advanced Sailing in Pacers

Third level of Yachting Australia’s Discover Sailing program. Course covers advaned techniques such as roll tacking, roll gybing, handling a spinnaker and trapeze work.

Prerequisite: Start Sailing 1 and Start Sailing 2 (or equivalent), must be able to swim and be water confident, buoyancy vest supplied.

Cost: Non-member $300, Junior Member $270 - both prices inclusive of GST (for 20 hour program)

 

 

Private Lessons and Courses:

PRIVATE LESSONS AND COURSES

Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, at the request of individuals, can arrange private lessons in Club owned Optimist, Pacer or Laser dinghies. Participants are also able to sail in their own boat. This flexible option is useful for sailors wishing to gain additional skills outside a structured course or are unable to attend a scheduled course due to other committments.

Special lessons can also be customised for groups as required, this is a cost effective way to advance quickly whilst receiving one-on-one instruction.

Lessons are customised to suit the individuals needs and can be booked directly through Training Centre Principal Jenn Suffield.

START RACING & BETTER RACING - Optimists, Lasers and Mirrors

Course is conducted subject to demand - it is designed to introduce new sailors to Club racing either as a skipper or crew. Course includes fitness preparation and planning, starting line and procedures, mark rounding rules and advanced boat handling.

Prerequisite: Better Sailing, must have good boat handling skills.

Cost: Non-member $300, Junior Member $270 - both prices inclusive of GST (for 20 hour program)

INTRODUCTION & ADVANCED TEAM RACING - Advanced Sailing in Pacers

Course for sailors wishing to get involved in this fast growing style of racing, whether it be at Club or school level. Course gives participants an understanding of basic team racing fundamentals, including finishing combinations, essential rules and tactics, boat handling and speed control. The Advanced Team Racing course builds and sharpens these skills in preparation for a competition.

Prerequisite: Better Sailing, must have good boat handling skills or prior racing experience.

Cost: $245 per person inclusive of GST (minmum of 8 participants)

START CREWING - Keelboat Courses in Bakewell-White 8's (BW8's)

First module in Yachting Australia's National Keelboat Scheme. Course covers introduction to boat handling, safety and sailing theory. This module is suitable for novice sailors 14 years and over who have little or no sailing experience. It will provide participants with the skills and confidence to join a keelboat crew on a regular Thursday or Saturday afternoon race. Course involves both on-water and theor sessions.

Prerequisite: Must be 14 years or over.

Cost: $360 for non-members and $330 for members. Includes use of buoyancy vest, insurance cover, Yachting Australia keelboat syllabus and log book, Introductory Keelboat Manual and course completion certificate.

CURRICULUM OR CO-CURRICULAR BASED SAILING FOR SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES

Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club conducts casses for school groups, either during school hours or after school.

These can include "A Taste of Sailing" option where contact time is limited, or any of the above courses. Classes can also be tailored to each group's specific needs, for example a combination of dinghy and keelboat sailing.
