RFBYC Sailing Institute Program

RFBYC Sailing Institute Program

Bringing the Sailing Institute program to you at home……

Our Sailing Institute program came to fruition at Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club in 2016, replacing our Youth Squad program. Head Coach Ben Durham & Susan Ghent with the support of Sailing Committee aimed to provide opportunities and a more structured pathway for our members to International competition.

Over Winter, our Club runs a Youth Racing Squad and a Match Racing Squad to introduce youth and teenage sailors to the fundamentals of sailing Keelboats and Match Racing.

The two programs are designed with a mentor structure where information is shared and passed on to the next generation. We are fortunate to have a group of highly skilled match racing sailors at our Club with great success competing on the international circuit. When they are home in Perth, these sailors assist their peers to establish teams.

Our coaches adapt the training program to suit the group. The sailors are involved in specialised, fun on land and on water sessions. Our coaches cover many technical aspects of match racing including; boat handling, fitness, nutrition, match racing fundamentals and match racing rules. Each year our sailors are given the opportunity to visit a sail loft and as a team build a sail together. To conclude the training program, sailors visit ‘Indian’ Racing team – RFBYC Offshore race boat. The team share experience on safety, watch systems and the intricacies to running offshore sailing campaigns.

Every year our Club is the organising authority for several Match racing events. Our young teams start their match racing journey at our annual Sailing Institute Regatta and training regattas. They build their skills and match racing rankings by participating in local events and then progress to graded events such as our JESS Match Cup. In collaboration with Royal Perth Yacht Club and Swan River Sailing, RFBYC hosts the Warren Jones International regatta. Three RFBYC teams competed in the 2020 regatta. These events support our teams to build their match racing rankings which qualify them for invitations to other match racing regattas around the world.

In addition, RFBYC run a Summer Squad which is a Match Racing program open to all RFBYC Members of all ages. This program provides opportunities for our Members to race on our BW8 Keelboats and advance their match racing knowledge.

Many of our sailors are currently striving for, International, Olympic, Volvo and Americas Cup representation. Some of our sailors have already started their professional sailing careers in our Sailing Institute program and we look forward to following them in the future.

We appreciate that not all our sailors follow the pathway to professional sailing. Our Sailing Institute teaches professionalism, resilience, communication, collaboration, and many more life skills. Through the program and broader membership of RFBYC, our sailors are also exposed to a mentor and networking programs to help them to build a career alongside or after sport. Throughout all our Sailing Institute programs our sailors build networks, friendships and sailing becomes a sport that I am sure they will choose to participate in for life.

We would like to acknowledge our Sailing Institute partners, coaches and volunteers who continually support our program.

Swan River Sailing, Warren Jones Regatta, One Sails Australasia, Australian Sailing-WA, MarinePlus and Gill Australia.
