There is a feast of match racing on Freshwater Bay from now until 25th of the month. The M32 fleet are in residence and next week sailing “rock stars” from around the world will be in town for the World Match Racing Tour Match Cup Australia.
Eighteen skippers from nine nations will be fighting it out right off the club in the first Championship level event of the 2017 tour. The line-up includes Olympic medallists, round the world sailor, record breakers, and some of our own home grown talent.
The racing is fast and intense, with each heat lasting only about 13 minutes, and all so close to the club lawn that you can almost touch the boats.
International skippers include:-
|Defending World Champion|
|Multiple world record holder|
|Past World Champion|
|Round the world sailor|
|Ian Williams||GBR||6 Times World Champion (the first person to beat local skipper Peter Gilmour’s record of 5 World Championships)|
|Nickolai Sehested||Denmark||Round the world race skipper|
|Niklas Dackhammer||Sweden||Youth World Champion|
|Olympic Gold medallist|
Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club is opening up for visitors to come and watch, so come and join the crowd and cheers our local heroes, Sam Gilmour, David Gilmour, Torvar Mirsky and Matt Jerwood.
For the rest of this week there is the Perth Match Cup, from which three skippers will qualify for next week’s major event.
