RFYBC team third at Women's Keelboat State Championship

The Women’s States were sailed on the Foundation 36’s out of Royal Perth last Saturday. Seven teams competed on the water with our team totalling a crew of 14!! We sailed with a core crew of 4 and then rotated the other 3 positions amongst the remaining sailors. In this way it was possible for as many sailors as possible to have a taste of regatta sailing!

Five races were scheduled back to back and the day started with a light breeze out of the west. The breeze slowly built but continued to vary in direction and strength – up to 15 knots at one point. Combined with a drenching shower it made for tricky conditions especially around the top mark which was deep in Matilda Bay.

Racing was close with penalty circles being taken and a few protests heard. Our results were a bit inconsistent with a score line of 6, 6, 1, 5 and 1; great to get two first places and to finish on a good note.  Congratulations to SoPYC – April Jorgensen and her crew who sailed consistently to win overall. Closely followed by RPYC Jen Richardson and her crew.  The RFBYC crew were third on a countback so those two first places were very important!

Well done to Sandy Anderson for great steering. Emma Tongue, Trish Ford and Nicky Swinburn made up the rest of the core crew. Bernie Lenny, Lyn Micha, Cate Heathcote-Smith, Emilie Ingate, Deb Henderson, Rina Lewis, Giulia Pinto, Sue Makin, Philippa Leggat and Emma Reynolds were rotated for the other crew.

Thanks to RFBYC for their support and the coaching (great input from Sam Gilmour and Mark Lovelady) leading up to the regatta.
