RFBYC started team racing a couple of months ago on keelboats (BW8) with coached sessions from some of our young gun sailors (Sam and Lachy Gilmour, Mark Spearman, Mark Whittington).
The aim was to improve boat handling skills, team work and understanding of team racing rules and strategies, to put this knowledge into practice in a competition, which was held on 29th August 2015.
With wonderful support from John Taylor and his team of start boat/mark layers and umpires, 6 races were completed with all boats in teams of two competing against each other. The regatta was run in the spirit of good sportsmanship and was coached, with feedback also given from umpire Jenn Suffield.
It was a highly successful regatta with Ethan Lowe and his team winning the top spot and trophy! Congratulations to them all.
Thanks to the support from RFBYC, we will break for a couple of weeks with training to resume later this month. We are looking at moving the sessions to Sunday afternoons however, will confirm this to the sailors via email. It is envisaged that RPYC will be invited to train with RFBYC on occasions and the next regatta is planned to be inter club.
Training will be in team racing or match racing format and sailors are encouraged to form their own team to train or to join the already growing number of teams. The level is Corinthian but participants must know how to sail as the coaching is focused on team/match racing skills and tactics.
