An amazing opportunity for (3) RFBYC members, Mark Spearman (20), Lachy Gilmour (18) & Tom Blaauw (18) who will head to Gallipoli to compete against other university students in the inaugural Gallipoli Games due to coincide with the 100 year anniversary of the Anzac's landing at Gallipoli.
The team will compete against universities from 7 countries, Turkey, Germany, Great Britain, France, New Zealand and India – all the countries that fought in Gallipoli in 1915.
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for these UWA sailing students to travel to Turkey, representing Australian during the commemoration period and to represent Australia against other international universities. This trip is fully funded by the Turkish Government, and they are hoping to make it a biannual event.
Their schedule will see the trio departing Perth with the rest of the team on 22 April, arriving in Gallipoli just prior to the Games. Their journey will start in Gallipoli for the dawn service on 25 April with the Opening Ceremony in Canakkale that night followed by sailing on 27-28 April. The Closing Ceremony will take place in Istanbul on 29 April. The boys will be competing in the Laser Radial Class and whilst familiar to Mark (past World Youth Laser Radial Champion), it will be a change for Lachy & Tom who have come from the 420 Class.
UWA and Australian University Sport are providing the team with ‘team gear on and off the water’ with Bruce Meakins being appointed as the Australian Sailing Team manager.
We wish Mark, Lachy & Tom safe travelling and look forward to hearing about, what is sure to be an incredible experience!
