Competition was tight throughout the regatta, with teams from all over the world showing why they were representing their country. After 3 days of preliminary racing, Neptune Racing finished the round robin series with a scorecard of 11 wins 3 losses, qualifying for finals in second place.
We were then matched up against Valerio Gelati and team Italy- the 7th place finishers in the round robin. In a close fought quarter final we managed to qualify for the next round of racing, defeating the Italians 3-1.
Our semi final was against team USA- skippered by Nevin Snow. Having raced Nevin over 10 times in the previous three weeks, the team was looking forwards to some close racing once again. Neptune Racing managed to perform strongly, winning 3-0 in an intense light air series. This regatta was the last time we would be racing Snow and team, having built up quite a rivalry over the previous few events.
On the final day of racing the forecast was showing some very marginal racing conditions, forcing the race committee to postpone racing until some wind showed up. Eventually, as the time limit grew closer a 3-5 knot sea breeze filled in and teams headed out for the final showdown.
The top ranked team at the event, Joachim Aschenbrenner from Denmark was our opponent for the final, having performed strongly throughout the week. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to seize on a number of opportunities, going down 0-3 against Aschenbrenner. The final was a great learning experience, and taught us a number of lessons which we will build on as we continue our tour.
Finals results were as follows:
1 Joachim Aschenbrenner, DEN
2 Sam Gilmour, AUS
3 Nevin Snow, USA
4 Pierre Quiroga, FRA
5 Mark Lees, GBR
6 Valerio Galati, ITA
7 Chris Steele, NZL
8 Tyler Rice, ISV
9 Markus Rönnberg, FIN
10 Nelson Mettraux, SUI
11 Philip Bendon, IRL
12 Jakob Klitte, SWE
13 Florian Haufe, GER
14 Vladislav Abramov, RUS
15 Slawomir Plichta, POL
Current results for our tour are 2,2,1,2 from our first four regattas, a trend that we would be happy to continue! We are now heading to Pornichet, France for our next regatta also on the J80.
Once again, Neptune Racing must thank Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club for all their ongoing support, as well as the Ron Tough Yachting Foundation. Additionally, Zhik, Kaenon and MonkeyFist Marine for the clothing and apparel.
