49er Press Release - Upcoming National & Oceania Championships

A big season of regattas located in Perth, Western Australia will see large numbers of 29er’s, 49er’s and FX’s head west to enjoy beautiful waters and the legendary freo doctor during next summer.

Western Australia has strong numbers in the 29er, 49er and the 49erFX and conditions in Perth offer great racing and training conditions as well as great venues. The first of the regattas is the Australian 9er Championships, which will be held at Jervoise Bay Sailing Club. This is the third year that the 29er, 49er and 49erFX classes will hold their Australian titles together. This offers a great regatta feel and the opportunity for the younger 29er sailors the chance to mingle and learn from the older 49er and FX sailors.

Jervoise Bay Sailing Club is just minutes from the City of Fremantle which has a proud and long association with the sport of sailing. The course areas are situated in Owen Anchorage, which is protected by Woodmans Point. This means unobstructed breezes with flat water, which is ideal for skiff sailing. The course areas are close to shore allowing for spectators to watch from the beach. The 9er Australian Championships will be held from the 28th of December through to the 3rd of January.

After the Australian Championships the 29er sailors will compete at the Australian Youth Championships hosted by Fremantle Sailing Club from the 6th of January to the 10th.  The 49er and 49erFX sailors will move to the picturesque Swan River to compete in the inaugural Oceania Regatta. This event will be hosted by Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club from the 6th of January through to the 11th of January. Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club is a prominent club on the river and has an excellent history with hosting international events. The club overlooks the main course area and will offer excellent viewing for spectators, friends and family. The Swan River is an excellent location for skiff sailing.

The Western Australian 9er Association encourages the sailing community in general to become involved in these regattas. There are many on and off water volunteer positions available for people in which they can participate. 9er sailing is fun, fast and exciting to watch and the regattas will have an excellent atmosphere. International teams are also encouraged to attend and we look forward to having a multinational fleet. For further information about competing or volunteering for these events please contact Australian President Matt Jahn at mattjahn@hotmail.com
