Seventeen Mirrors contested the first heat of the 2013-14 State Championships at Maylands Yacht Club on Sunday 17th October. The warm weather was a welcome change but the very light conditions in the morning made for an interesting first race.
Half the fleet got away in a 'gust' of 1 or 2 knots while the rest were left wallowing in dead calm. The fickle patchy wind meant that the second half of the fleet were timed out finishing more that 15 minutes after the first boat. A long early lunch followed but by 1pm the south westerly had arrived.
Three races were sailed in the afternoon's 8-15 knots of gusty and shifty breeze and saw some close and exciting racing. After four races father and son teams David and Timothy Pilbeam and Simon and Tyson Barwood are both on 10 points but Liam Wilson and Dylan Holthouse made the most of the afternoon conditions to score two wins and a second after a DNF in the first race. There is also plenty of interest mid fleet with close contests in the sub junior, junior and ladies divisions with a special mention to Sidonia Barwood (13) and Rosie Rowell (11) who set a few tongues wagging after finishing 4th in their very first race together.
There will be a wait to see how this all plays out as races 5 to 8 to complete the series are to be sailed on 30th March 2014 at Safety Bay Yacht Club.
Many thanks to Maylands Yacht Club for organising a very enjoyable day's racing and to all the Mirror sailors for supporting the different format this season.
