Team Gilmour takes Gold at ISAF Nations Cup - Grade One Event

Team Gilmour has tasted sweet victory in Middelfart, Denmark at the ISAF Nations Cup in a whitewash final series against local hero Nicolai Sehested.

The team recovered well from an intense second semi-final race against Japan's Warato Sakamoto on Friday afternoon. The match was penalty fuelled and filled with controversial umpire decisions. Sakamoto won the race which left us feeling a little frustrated, but nothing a "hearty" Pete Nicholas spaghetti bog couldn't fix.

A swim in the pool, big dinner and an early night was just what the boys needed to refocus and prepare for the rest of the semi-finals on Saturday morning. We discussed in our debrief that we had to sail a cleaner race and not put any decision into the umpires hands. That is exactly what we did! We disposed of Sakamoto with 2 clean races and were through to the final!!

In the other semi-final it was the local team skippered by Nicolai Sehested who were winners against Swede Viktor Ogeman which also ended in a 3/1 score card. We knew that we had a big task on our hands racing against Sehested and his Trefor Match Racing Team (world # 12), They have been in good form recently and had been sailing well throughout the event.

Our plan was to sail the same way that we had in the last 2 races of the semi-finals, fast and free. The conditions were quite light and shifty but we knew that we were able to sail the boat fast in all conditions, so all we had to do was focus on our own boat and try to sail the shortest possible distance around the course.

Some excellent calls from tactician Ed Powys got us into the best breeze off every start!  David was on point in the pre-starts managing to get a penalty on the Danes in the first race and winning the favoured end of the line every time.  "Cheesie" on the bow called flawless laylines and time on distance, but it was the "power department", Luke Payne and Pete Nicholas that kept the boat moving super fast throughout all the manoeuvres with perfect trimming of the sails!  We managed to defeat the Danes 3 to 0 in the best of 5 final in what was an emphatic victory!

The boys are so stoked with the win!

We are off to Chicago on Tuesday for the first event of the US Grand Slam Series starting next weekend. Remember there are still some video highlights from Nations Cup on the link below:
