Junior Members Carrie Smith and Ella Clark were prepared for a last day fight for the gold after coming off the water at the ISAF Youth Sailing Worlds. The girls started the day behind the leading Italian crew in the 420 class.
The Italians won the opening race with Smith and Clark second, with the Australians taking the win in race two. The Italians crossed the line third. It looked like it was going to come down to Friday’s race with the Australians going into it eight points ahead until news came through late in the day that Italy’s Ilaria Paternoster and Benedetta di Salle received a non-excludable discard from Race 10, receiving a maximum points score that they carried in their overall score.
This meant Carrie and Ella’s three wins saw the pair move into the lead and open up a seven point gap over second place and the Aussies had the job done and could enjoy the final day on the water.
'The conditions today were like being back at home and we took the opportunity to have some great racing,' said Clark. 'We came out with three wins which is really good for us.'
Smith and Clark, who competed at their in their third and final Youth Worlds in the 420 class, added the gold medal to the silver they won in 2012.
'We’re pretty excited,' said Smith, 'It’s been a long time in the making and this regatta has just been perfect and we’ve really enjoyed it.'
Clark added, 'It’s been a really good regatta for us. This was our third and final shot at this regatta and to come out as World Champions, especially with a race to spare, we’re stoked.'
'To win is really great and a little unexpected today,' said Clark. 'We came in for the day in the lead and then found out that we’d beaten the Italians with a day to spare. We’re really excited with the result, it was unexpected at this stage but a great surprise.'
In recent years it has become a tradition for the Australian Youth World team to lift their golden sailors off the water and Smith and Clark were head and shoulders above the rest, 'We saw it with [Club Member] Mark Spearman last year and didn’t think they could do it with a 420 and with us on it but it was awesome and a great feeling.'
