Valmadre Cup event, held on Saturday 6 July 2013, consisted of two windward and return races off Leighton Beach in flat water and a perfect sailing breeze that began at around eight knots and built to around 12 during the second race. Only the bitter cold prevented the day from being perfect, but this is, after all, a winter series!
The standout performance for the day was in Division 1, where Dave Walling’s The Next Factor won both races on both IRC and YAH handicaps. Tony Mitchell’s Sled, skippered again by Andrew Harry, was second YAH and IRC in race 1 and 3rd IRC and 2nd YAH in race 2 to round off a very good day.
Craig Carter’s Hoodoo Man continues to perform well in Division 2. First IRC and 3rd YAH in race 1 was backed up with a 4th IRC in race 2, which might have been much better but for one tactical error. So close are the Division 2 results that only seconds separate placegetters and every move is a potential winner.
Nimbus had to return after a premature start in the first race but still finished 4th on IRC, backed up with a third in race 2.
The series is enjoying excellent support with well over 40 entries in each race.
