On water at the Women's Keelboat Championships

RFBYC entered two teams for this event sailed in the Foundation 36 yachts from Swan River Sailing. The skippers were Adele Jackson – the defending champion – and Sandy Anderson. Adele’s team was made up from experienced members of RFBYC and Sandy’s team had a core of experienced crew with the novice ladies twilight sailors rotating in the crew. A great experience for them and a big learning curve!

Eight teams were entered and the racing took place last Saturday morning with five races scheduled. John Taylor was the race officer and he managed to get in the five races despite very shifty conditions. The day started off well with coffee and muffins being served in the Roland Smith Room before the briefing and then onto the water for commencement of racing at 9am. There were a few postponements as the breeze was shifting a great deal. Adele got off to a good start with a first place. Not so good for Sandy with an OCS!

Race 2 followed with big holes in the wind and some very big shifts. Adele lost out on a protest so they had sailed their discard with Sandy finishing 6th. Both teams settled into a rhythm after a shaky start and finished with 2, 2 1 for Adele and 4, 1, 2 for Sandy.

In fact Freshie finished first and second in the last two races! Some very close racing which provided a good spectacle for those watching. The final regatta standings were –

1st        RFBYC          Adele Jackson

2nd       SoPYC           Jennifer Sims

3rd        RFBYC          Sandy Anderson

 4th       FSC                Carolyne Bush

5th        RPYC             Jen Richardson

6th        SoPYC           Emily Petterson

7th        EFYC             Lauren Dawson

8th        RPYC             Janet Hornbuckle

A great result for Freshie with 1st & 3rd overall! And great crew work from:

Skipper: Adele Jackson. Crew: Chelsea Hall, Jen Suffield, Ella Guidice, Elise Manners, Sian Honeybell, Nadia Punselie.

Skipper: Sandy Anderson. Crew: Trish Ford, Emma Tongue, Jo Wilson. Rotating crew: Jenny Spearman, Bernie Lenny, Kristy Dyson, Emma Reynolds, Renia Edwards, Karen Chatfield.

Thanks also to Grant Alderson who coached the teams in the training sessions leading up to the States and to Freshie for their support of women’s sailing.
