RFBYC OFFSHORE SAILORS vs "The Rest"

HALLS HEAD OCEAN RACE AND POINT ROBERT RETURN OCEAN RACE

(report by Bryan Thurston and Peter Hickson)

HALLS HEAD RACE – 9 March 2013

Saturday had the crews of RFBYC Offshore racers up early for the trip down river. ALFRESCO skippered by Frank Saraceni and SLED skippered by Tony Mitchell headed up the DIV I team with HOODOO MAN skippered by Craig Carter, X- FACTOR skippered by Alan Stein and MULBERRY skippered by Peter Hickson representing DIV II.

The day is fine, the apps for Windfinder Navman Perth Weather are being worked overtime to plot the best course with the wind changes being forecast.

The start is 9.30am – we have all had our plentiful supply of snacks from Cherry on the START BOAT, our McDonalds coffee and breakfast burgers have been finished hours ago.

The wind is an easterly at 10-15 knots with a sea breeze forecast at about noon, so it’s a spinnaker run to the channel then another spinnaker run to the outer beacon at Garden Island. Then the tactical decision needs to be made – stay close to the coast or go out to meet the sea breeze? The majority of the fleet pick the coast and the easterly stays in until 1500hrs, which gives the whole fleet except MULBERRY, CIRCA and 2 x Division III boats, who have headed out and have been becalmed for the best part of an hour as they watch the whole fleet including Division III sail along the coast and get approximately 10NM lead at the last rounding mark. Now for the good news for CIRCA and MULBERRY as the sea breeze kicks in, becalming the whole fleet on the shore who have to watch MULBERRY, CIRCA and Division III spinnakers come in with the sea breeze to the last rounding mark where the rest of the fleet is becalmed.

MULBERRY was able to carry off first place with the momentum gained from the sea breeze change with the RFBYC boats carrying out:

DIVISION 1:

  • ALFRESCO – 1st
  • SLED – 2nd (fastest)

DIVISION II:

  • MULBERRY – 1st
  • X FACTOR – 2nd
  • HOODOO MAN – (fastest)

So that led to a fabulous night at Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club at which the MULBERRY crew rolled in at 0400hrs after visiting a party on a 50’ sunseeker.

POINT ROBERT RETURN RACE – 10 March 2013

On Sunday the MULBERRY crew were very subdued and it is a north easterly that is going to give all boats a great test out.

Once again most boats choose the coastal run but as this is not MULBERRY’s preferred wind at sea, we head for the horizon to be able to make one long run into the outer beacon at Garden Island. This worked a treat until we were about 8mins from the beacon and the wind died making this a 20min leg.

By the time we got to the finish line we had finished 2nd – 33 seconds behind X FACTOR who have taken on Poodle, Squinty and Chewy of “This Way Up” fame to finish 1st and back up three really good GBRW week results.  New “X Factor” owner Alan Stein was suitably impressed.

DIVISION I:

  • WALK ON THE WILD SIDE (SoPYC) – 1st
  • KNEE DEEP (HYC) – 2nd
  • ALFRESCO – 3rd

DIVISION II:

  • X FACTOR – 1st
  • MULBERRY – 2nd
  • HOODOO MAN – 3rd (fastest)

It was also great to see Offshore Division III continue to thrive, with 12 starters.  Only problem, none were from Freshie.  We need to fix that!
